Hi mama,
It’s Etta here, Founder of Lactamo. I know you’re probably reading this one-handed, juggling a babe, and multi-tasking in some other way at the same time. There are so many things to juggle as a mum. But I hadn’t expected breastfeeding to be a juggle - I just thought that, since it’s ‘natural’, it would be easy. Right?
Not for me! Breastfeeding caught me off guard with all of my four children (Emilia, 10, Otto, 8, Ingrid, 4, and Albert, 2). I felt like I encountered every breastfeeding challenge imaginable: oversupply, undersupply, pain, blocked ducts, engorgement, mastitis (just to name a few). Something that I had assumed would be so simple became a daily struggle, and made me feel like a complete failure.
At the time, I thought I was the odd one out. But after a bit of research, I discovered that 92% of mums experience these common problems.
It got me thinking: “if everyone has such a hard time breastfeeding, why aren’t there enough solutions to fix it?”
I knew what type of solution would help me, and I realised that that solution could help not just me but others too. As Kochie from Sunrise said recently, Lactamo could lead to “a whole new era for hundreds of millions of women”. Thanks, Kochie!
Meet Lactamo, your sidekick for navigating your breastfeeding journey
Lactamo is a first-of-its-kind product that harnesses the power of breast massage and temperature. These components have the ability to address the common breastfeeding problems - including oversupply, undersupply, pain, blocked ducts, engorgement, and mastitis.
Lactamo is a massage ball, specifically developed and designed for the elasticity of lactating breast tissue, with hollow surface lumps filled with gel that can be heated or cooled, and is simple, reusable and affordable.
Lactamo is rolled over the breast and is aimed at stimulating milk production and flow and aiding the let-down reflex, helping clear blocked ducts, helping relieve swelling and pain, and helping fight off infection. It uses three simple components (temperature, movement and compression) to offer a range of benefits for breastfeeding women.
For the last 2 years I have led a team of experts including lactation consultants, healthcare professionals, industrial designers and medtech commercialisation experts, and Lactamo launched in August 2021. I have been incredibly proud of how Lactamo has been received: Lactamo has been hailed as a breakthrough in the breastfeeding space by leading industry experts, and has taken out a number of accolades including being named the Winner of Best New Business Idea 2020 at TEDxSydney with St.George, Winner of the 2019 Australian MedTech Actuator Award (Australia and India), and Regional Winner “Outstanding Startup” Business NSW.
Deakin University and the Western Health Partnership have recently conducted and sponsored a successful clinical trial on Lactamo, which was so successful that 100% of the mums in the trial said that they would recommend Lactamo to other mums.
And this is just the start, which brings me to today’s exciting announcement about our latest offering at Lactamo.
